Transferring EPDs

Hi,

Our company has recently acquired a smaller company who already has verified EPDs for their products. Will their EPDs still be valid up to the expiry dates if there is a change in manufacturing location please?

They are still trading under the same name, same materials, suppliers etc. but the location will move 500km (same country).

Thanks

Hi,
When a company acquires another company with existing verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), validity after a significant change—such as relocating production—is a critical consideration. Generally, EPD validity is maintained only if the manufacturing processes, materials, suppliers, and energy mix remain unchanged or demonstrate negligible differences. However, even if other parameters remain stable, a change of manufacturing location—especially one as substantial as 500 km is considered to be a significant change.

According to the key standards:

ISO 14025:2006 clearly states that if significant process changes or location shifts occur, a revision and potential re-verification of the EPD is usually necessary to ensure continued validity.

EN 15804+A2:2019 also highlights that significant changes—including production location, transport distances, energy sourcing, or upstream impacts—typically necessitate reviewing or updating the EPD.
