Understanding the impact of the updated Energy Performance of Buildings Directive on the ‘Fit for 55’ goals
The updated Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) in the European Union, part of the ‘Fit for 55’ package, aims to enhance sustainability and energy efficiency in the building sector, accounting for 40% of the EU’s energy usage and 36% of its energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.
Key features include new carbon footprint requirements, zero-emission standards for new buildings by 2030, objectives to boost energy efficiency in both residential and non-residential buildings, uniform Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) across the EU, and strategies for improving building renovations.
The revised EPBD is expected to be formally adopted in early 2024, entering into force 20 days following publication and requiring EU member states to transpose it into national laws within two years. This directive is integral to the EU’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
