EU Parliament approves revised EPBD — a milestone in ‘Fit for 55’ climate initiative

The EU Parliament’s approval of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) is a significant step in the ‘Fit for 55’ climate initiative, aiming for sustainability and energy efficiency in EU’s building sector.

Key updates include:

  • Carbon Footprint Requirements: New standards for calculating and reporting buildings’ carbon emissions.
  • Zero-Emission Standard for New Buildings: A mandatory goal for all new constructions to be zero-emission by a specific date.
  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency Targets: Stricter energy efficiency criteria for buildings to reduce energy consumption.
  • Renovation Initiatives: Plans to encourage and facilitate the renovation of existing buildings to lower emissions.

This legislation is pivotal for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, emphasising the need for member states and businesses to take further actions. One Click LCA provides tools and training to meet these new standards efficiently. For more details, you can read the full article here.

Can you help me clarify one thing? The initial proposal included a requirement to calculate the GWP of new buidlings larger than 2000 square meters as of 2027. When was this changed to 1000 m2 and as of 2028?

@Samuel I too thought it was 2000 m2, could you check for Mari?

Hi there! This had changed a couple times I think until the final approval. The latest information before the approval was indeed for 2000m2 and 2027 but things changed  Here is the full adopted text and a snapshot of Article 7.

Gotcha, thanks for explaining this Marios! I thought that even one of the official EU websites still listed 2000 m2 and 2027 so this is good to know.
