End of life product packaging

We are doing Product EPD’s. Covering A1-A3 +C1-C4. During our mentoring sessions the end of life final product packaging was included in C1-C4. However recently I have heard that this is incorrect. If we were including installation ( not relevant for us) it would be included in A5. Could you clarify how to deal with Product packaging EOL? We have an steel and PP IBC so we don’t want to ignore the EOL impacts ideally.

Hi David,

Thanks for your question.

This may depend on the Program Operator you’re publishing with, if their PCR has specific rules about handling packaging waste.

For EPD Hub, if you don’t declare A5, it is not mandatory to include the waste treatment of packaging materials. Please see EPD Hub’s PCR 1.2, updated 15 September 2025, section 3.6 here:

If you do wish to declare the packaging impacts, you can do so in Module C. Please note that biogenic carbon and energy balancing shall be done in A3, whether you omit the packaging waste processing or include it in C.

I hope this helps to clarify,
Graham
