Quantifying new material impact in existing building

Hello, I’ve followed the tips on selecting “reused material” and now want to quantify the difference between the reused material impact and the new material impact. Any tips on calculating and visualization of a graphic? Are these standard or custom? Would I just take the difference of new A1-A3 and A5 impacts from the total? Thanks!

Hi Kai!

If you would like to compare the impacts of re-use vs virgin materials then easiest would be to utilise two separate designs for that. You could do manual deduction from the totals as you said, and take the changed A1-A3 and A5 emissions (however if you source these products on site, e.g. the previous/existing asset, then this may affect your A4 emissions too).

In One Click LCA you could copy your existing design, and rename one to ‘reused materials’ or similar, then check the boxes to which materials will be reused on the site. Adjust A4 distances if needed.

The front page graphs will be able to visualise both designs right away (for my screenshot I did not do such an assessment put just pointing to where they are).

Additionally the ‘compare’ feature on the results page will show you the percentage comparison for different indicators, depending on the tool you use and the new LEED comparative report gets you a full comparison in a word document too.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks this is a better approach. It’s an existing building with few new materials, so the difference between the proposed and reused portion is the impact of the new material.
