Hi, we are required from a client to show that (the exact wording): “80% or more of the embodied carbon in products and materials [A1 - A3] shall be in items that are designed for reuse” .
We feel that there is a misunderstanding on client’s part what reuse is. However is there a way to get a % figure of materials only at stage A1-A3 which are not destined for landfill?
Many thanks

Hi Jana,
thank you for your question.
GWP emissions (80% of A1-A3 GWP emissions) are not assessed in the Building Circularity Tool. Therefore, I advise instead choosing a tool that
- calculates A1-A3 GWP-emissions
- allows the selection of the EoL-method, i.e. assuming that it will be reused.
An example of such tool is GLA/RICS.
I’d recommend the following workflow to achieve what your client requested:
- Input all the materials into the chosen tool.
- Select “Market-scenarios (user-adjustable)” in the LCA-parameters, as otherwise, you won’t have the option to select the EoL-method you want (“Reuse as material”).
- Set the EoL to “Reuse as material” for the materials where this applies.
- Navigate to the results page and download the Excel report via “More actions” > “Detailed report”.
. - Use the filtering options in Excel to only display A1-A3 emissions, and sum them up (100%).
- Filter out materials based on the EoL, so that you only see the materials that will be reused. Calculate the sum of A1-A3 emissions of materials that will be reused - and check if this is >80% of the value computed in the previous step.
I hope this is helpful to you. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
