Building Materials

I am doing a college dissertation on life cycle assessment and embodied carbon. in order for my project to work i need to have a sample building. is there anywhere i can find a already designed building with dimensions, materials etc.

Hi there,

welcome to our community and thank you for your question! Below are my ideas of what could help you.

Carbon Designer 3D (CD3D):

  • The CD3D automatically chooses fitting materials from the database and thereby calculates emissions.

  • The required inputs are:

    • Tool that you want to use (i.e. should the calculations be done according to e.g. Levels, LEED, GLA/RICS etc.)
    • Reference building (e.g. climatic zone of the building, helps software to select materials)
    • GFA
    • (Depending on tool: Calculation period)
    • Building type
  • Based on these inputs (optionally also e.g. number of above-ground floors), default dimensions of the building are calculated (can be manually adjusted). Based on the dimensions the areas are then calculated, and these are multiplied with the emission factors from the automatically assigned materials to show the emission results.

  • Please note that the CD3D only displays results for GWP. If you
copy the CD3D design to your project, and have a tool that also assesses other impact categories there, they will be calculated as well (given the data standards of the tools match).

  • To learn more, sign up for our free course with videos walking you through how to use the CD3D here.

Demo projects:

  • On the main page of the software (the page you see after logging in), there is a tab called “Public demo”.

  • These are fully finished LCA projects for various certifications, to which you have read-only access. As examples they can thus help you to complete your own LCA.

  • Concerning the dimensions, in the “General information” of each project, you can see the GFA of that building.
