New Zealand’s Building for Climate Change program aims for near-zero building emissions by 2050, focusing on embodied carbon and operational efficiency.
It introduces two assessment methodologies: Whole-of-Life Embodied Carbon and Operational Efficiency.
The program envisions phased mandatory embodied carbon limits, starting with reporting for public sector projects. Financial incentives and collaboration with the industry aim to promote low-carbon materials. Early impact assessments show a 10% decrease in the average embodied carbon of new buildings since 2019.
