HVO100 diesel modelling

Hello!
Has anyone found a way to model HVO100 diesel so that it could be used in EPD calculations? The Transport alternative fuels excel provided by OneClickLCA doesn’t cover HVO type of fuel only RME.

Hi,

We have now updated our Biodiesel Transport Excel Calculator in the help centre.

If you need any further help with this please let us know here or at support@oneclicklca.com.

Thanks! Great that you have this kind of tool now!
Just wondering, why “market for fossil diesel” is used in the modelling of HVO?
And why does the HVO have fossil CO2 emissions? I thought HVO is made of animal fat/vegetable oils, so use of fossil diesel and fossil CO2 emissions surprise me. Also many of the producers claim there are no CO2 emissions in use phase (sure one needs to be a bit critical here), so what are the assumptions in your excel and what they’re based on? I’d be happy to understand this a bit better.

Hi @vilma.nk

If it is 100% HVO, then there will be no CO2 fossil emissions, if it is a mix of HVO on 50%, 80%, 20% then the remaining portion is filled with the diesel and that’s the reason for the Market for diesel datapoint. And on the background of producing the HVO, unit processes requires fossil based energy and that’s not significant but can be present in some levels. I hope this explanation gives some highlight.

Hi,
well this helps a little.
It would be good then to correct the tool a bit. Now when choosing HVO 100%, the tool gives fossil CO2 emissions from pump-wheel phase (I’m assuming that to be TTW).
