RICS/GLA Editable End of Life Scenarios

End of Life Scenarios

While using One Click (on a Business License) for the ‘Whole life carbon assessment, GLA / RICS / Green Mark including EN15804 +A2 data’ tool, with the parameters set as per the One Click guidance ‘UK: Whole Life Carbon Assessment (RICS & GLA)’ found at UK: Whole Life Carbon Assessment (RICS & GLA) | One Click LCA, the EoL Process for each modelled input cannot be adjusted.

It is therefore unclear how the LCA will be in adherence to the RICS PS V1 requirement which states that:

‘The assessor should develop suitable project-specific EoL scenario(s) at a building level as well as individual components level where emphasized text relevant, based on future intentions provided by the project team, precedent and current EoL practices. The EoL scenario(s) should be clearly stated and explained within the whole life carbon assessment report’

and the GLA LPG guidance which requires that:

‘The potential carbon savings associated with these activities should be calculated and included in module D of the WLC assessment, based on the end-of-life scenarios reported for module C and in the Circular Economy Statement.’

Could you please let me know whether this is a licensing issue, and as per the attached screenshot, the ‘Expert’ license would be required to produce a fully RICS and GLA compliant WLCA?

WLCA Parameters using Whole life carbon assessment, GLA / RICS / Green Mark including EN15804 +A2 data’ tool

Additionally, can I please have some clarity as to why for RICS/GLA compliance, per the article attached above, the recommended selections for Country specific end of life scenarios and Site wastage values for materials appear to be ‘Global’ as opposed to UK based?

I note that the options available for Country specific end of life scenarios relate to the RICS V2 guidance or BREEAM V7.2, however for Site wastage values for materials, there is an option for ‘United Kingdom’, so I am unclear why the One Click guidance does not recommend following this?

Many thanks!

Hello Lewis, thank you for joining the forum and for raising this question.

The inability to adjust the End of Life (EoL) process for each modelled input when using a Business License in One Click LCA is due to licensing restrictions. The feature for detailed, user-adjustable EoL modelling is only available with Expert level licenses. This means that with a Business License, you cannot create project-specific EoL scenarios at the building or component level as required by RICS PS V1 and GLA LPG guidance. To fully comply with these requirements and produce a RICS and GLA compliant Whole Life Carbon Assessment, an Expert license is necessary, as it unlocks advanced EoL modelling options.

For your second question, please refer to our guidance on how to select the right parameters to compliant with RICS - 2nd Edition:

If you wish to upgrade to an Expert License, please let me know and we can start the process.

Best regards,

Hi Nada,

Thank you for your detailed response!

I will relay the information about the Expert License and get back to you.

On the Parameters question, for a bit more context, the assessments which we need to complete are referrable to the GLA and therefore, the guidance remains that they should be done under the 1st Edition of the Professional Statement per: Whole Life-Cycle Carbon Assessments guidance | London City Hall

Are you suggesting that the assessments undertaken in line with the first edition of the Professional Statement should now be set up in line with the recommended parameters for the Second Edition?

The above is key as, using the first edition, the default service lives and default transport distances will differ from the defaults provided in the second edition.

If you could please provide a bit more clarity, specifically around the parameters for the first edition of the guidance, that would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Lewis Ingham

Hello Lewis,

For the first edition of RICS, please use the following parameters:

You can check this article in our Help Centre to help you have more insight: UK: Whole Life Carbon Assessment (RICS & GLA)

I hope this clarifies the differences in the parameters between both editions.
