“To decarbonize buildings across their full life cycle, it is imperative to enable carbon optimization during the decision-making process and to be able to conduct whole life carbon (WLC) analysis in a standardized, transparent and consistent way.” — A path to alignment in the built environment
WBCSD, Autodesk, and six global AEC firms — AECOM, Arcadis, Arup, Foster + Partners, Ramboll, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill — collaborated to produce the new white paper: A path to alignment in the built environment.
Through this collaboration, key insights emerged about current building information modeling (BIM) workflows for carbon measurement, revealing both opportunities and challenges.
The report also proposes an embodied carbon assessment process that includes One Click LCA, supporting scalable and consistent whole-life carbon (WLC) assessments across projects. Furthermore, it recommends best practices, such as verifying the correct quantification methodology and defining responsible parties for calculating building areas. Clear communication around area definitions and quantification methods is essential to ensure transparency and comparability in carbon assessments.
