I’m trying to understand how to attempt LCA for Criterion 20 in GRIHA v.2019 (hopefully I have tagged the category correctly)
As per the GRIHA manual, the lifecycle stages to be considered for calculation are A1-A4 and B4 only, and has to be done for each individual material ( as listed in Table 20.4c)
Would appreciate if I can get some guidance regarding the same using the OneClickLCA software.
Also, would love to connect with others who have done LCA for GRIHA v.2019 to discuss the same!
Thanks for reaching out, you have tagged the correct category!
To answer your questions about the workflow:
A1–A3 (Product Stage): You are correct. These impacts are calculated automatically as soon as you add your material quantities to the project.
A4 (Transport): While the software has default parameters, please note that GRIHA v.2019 appraisals specifically require you to submit Google Maps images highlighting the road distance from the manufacturing source to the site. Therefore, you should manually update the transport distances in the tool to match your actual project data rather than relying on defaults.
B4 (Replacement): This is calculated based on the reference study period (typically the building service life, e.g., 50 years) and the service life of individual materials. The software provides defaults, but you can adjust these if you have specific manufacturer data.
End of Life (C1–C4): Although the Level(s) tool includes these stages by default, GRIHA v.2019 focuses on A1–A4 and B4. You can technically exclude the End-of-Life stages from your final GRIHA reporting if you wish.
Important Note on the Baseline: Remember that Criterion 20 requires you to demonstrate a percentage reduction against a “GRIHA Base Case”. This base case must be prepared uniquely for your project (considering the same size, function, orientation, etc.). You will likely need to model two designs in the tool,a Baseline and your Proposed Design,to generate the necessary comparison for the credit points.
