How are Generics and Energy Data generated?

Our Data Team recently published articles about this (see links below). Here are the points I found most interesting.

When creating generic materials as well as energy data at One Click LCA, “we follow a rigorous four-step process to ensure quality, accuracy and transparency”.

  • Generics:

    • “The material composition, also known as bill of materials (BOM) or bill of quantities (BOQ), for generic materials is obtained from publicly available, scientific LCA studies or comparable articles. The environmental impacts of these material components, when applicable, are modelled with generally available or customised life-cycle inventory (LCI) data and/or pre-existing generic materials data, including such produced by One Click LCA.”

    • The reason why impacts in a One Click LCA generic material are different compared to a similar EPD is that “generic materials are modelled to be usable globally, representing average production methods and technology. For this reason, material and energy inputs are global and not specific to your country.”

  • Energy Data:

    • The energy mix composition, i.e. the quantity of every fuel or energy source used in forming the respective energy mix, is obtained from reputable and publicly available data providers, such as IEA or eGRID. Underlying processes and elementary flows are modelled with generally available or customised life-cycle inventory (LCI) data.

    • The reason why OCL sometimes doesn’t directly report the national data published by national authorities, is that “the reported data format, calculation method and assumptions are most likely different” or that “the source data cannot be verified”.
