European Green Deal — Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) targets 2025 for mandatory sustainability shift

On December 4, 2023, the European Commission, Parliament, and Council reached a draft agreement on the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), a crucial component of the European Green Deal.

The ESPR, expected to be implemented in 2025, focuses on making all consumer products sold in Europe sustainable.

Key aspects include introducing digital product passports (DPP) for traceability, utilizing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for construction products, targeting planned obsolescence by promoting circularity and durability and enforcing ecodesign requirements online.

The ESPR aims to revolutionize global sustainable product design by setting minimum requirements for products sold in Europe, regardless of their manufacturing origin.
