I am performing a Whole-Building Life-Cycle Assessment for an office building in Portugal according to the LEED v4.1 BD+C MR credit Building Life-cycle Impact Reduction (Option 2) requirements.
While mapping the construction materials [1], I noticed the following warning:
The issue with this resource is as the warning says, the missing mass of the declared unit.
The manufacturer has decided to record the emissions of their product per 1 square meters. However, the mass information they reported, is 1300 KG / m3. From the document, we unfortunately cannot find out the thickness of the product and thus we do not know what 1 m2 of their product weighs.
If we do not know the weight of the product, we cannot calculate the transportation or the amount of product that will be recycled and therefore the resource is disabled.
If the manufacturer can provide the mass per square meter (e.g. mm, or kg per square meter) then we will be able to include the product.
Hi João, as the EPD its functional unit is per m2, we would need to understand if mortar or similar materials are included, which would change the quantity of blocks per m2. Would you be able to confirm this with the manufacturer?
According to the system boundary description, and as per manufacturer feedback, mortar or similar materials are not included: “Transportation to the site or the distributor, as well as its application on-site, are outside the scope of this study.” (EPD, section 2.1.2).
