The UK’s mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is setting the pace for global biodiversity impact measurement in construction. With five main drivers of global biodiversity loss identified by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), construction directly contributes to four of them.
Policies worldwide, such as the Environment Act 2021 and the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), are emerging to measure and report these impacts.
BNG, part of the UK’s Environment Act, mandates a 10% biodiversity net gain for developers, effective from early 2024.
One Click LCA is developing tools to support global biodiversity measurement and compliance with BNG, including biodiversity stress from supply chain updates and a Biodiversity Net Gain tool for UK customers, compliant with the statutory biodiversity metric. These tools aim to streamline the process for regulatory or voluntary biodiversity improvements in the built environment.
