Australia has unveiled a comprehensive plan to reduce the carbon footprint of its infrastructure sector, responsible for 70% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Launched in August 2023, Infrastructure Net Zero (InfraNZ) is a pioneering public-private partnership involving seven private-sector entities and three federal agencies.

With the Australian government committed to achieving net zero by 2050, InfraNZ focuses on decarbonizing the infrastructure sector, which directly contributes 15% of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative revolves around five key pillars: developing a national plan, influencing policy, advancing procurement practices, enhancing skills, and adopting technology solutions.

The Australian government has invested $20 million in InfraNZ, emphasizing collaboration between government and industry to drive lasting policy change, stimulate economic growth, and position Australia as a sustainability leader.

The initiative is hailed as a model for addressing the net-zero challenge through effective collaboration between public and private sectors.
