Hi, how do I add electricity produced from our own solar panels? I can’t find any datapoints for this

Hi Tobias,

thank you for your question.

The LCA modelling approach depends on your followed Product Category Rules (PCR). For solar panel energy, you can search for _Electricity production, photovoltaic_.

Hi Sandra,
Thank you for your reply. When I take a look on CO2e/kWh for “Electricity production, photovoltaic, 3kWp slanted-roof installation, multi-Si, panel, mounted (Reference product: electricity, low voltage)” this is higher than electricity from the grid. Is this because some energy losses from the solar panels are taken into account while these losses are not taken into account when using electricity from the grid?

Hi Tobias,

that is interesting indeed as often the electricity from grid has lower impact than the photovoltaics datapoint. Which was the datapoint and the region that you compared PV to?

Market for electricity, low voltage (Reference product: electricity, low voltage) country Sweden which I know already has a very low CO2 output in our national grid. _(0.0463 kg CO2e/kWh)_
Electricity production, photovoltaic, 3kWp slanted-roof installation, multi-Si, panel, mounted (Reference product: electricity, low voltage) _(0.096 kg CO2e/kWh)_
This was the most logic datapoint, but the others where also higher in CO2 than the grid

Hi Tobias,

thank you for clarifying this.

Swedish electricity grid includes a high share of hydropower, which partially explains relatively low total impact. Also worth mentioning is the lifespan of a PV panel, which in comparison to hydropower plant, is significantly lower.

Thank you for your reply, Sandra. It just shows that, as usual, it’s not as black and white when it comes to what’s the best solution for the environment.
